Julia Gascoigne Palmer, based in Farnham, was named the inaugural Baines Surrey Artist of the Year 2009 last October. Julia’s work was initially selected from a public vote during the annual Surrey Open Studios season in June 09 which attracted a variety of local talent, from painters and sculptors to jewellery makers and textile artists. A total of 385 artists entered the county-wide annual art competition, which will be in its 10th Year this June.

Julia’s work, popular with both the judges and the public vote for its bright use of colour and nod to beauty in nature.  Here at the New Ashgate we find it is refreshing to see that not far from the London contemporary art scene the public are choosing the aesthetic over the conceptual in contemporary art.

Julia’s work as a painter has woven a path between landscape, interiors and still life.  “My love of colour has always been at the forefront of my work with an early interest in the Fauvist Artists.” This work was further stimulated by her travels in East Africa, North America and Mexico, culminating in a painting scholarship in the North Yemen.

Her interest in landscape grew on moving to Farnham from London in 1993, and she’s aware of the influence of the local Surrey landscape on her work: “Much inspiration for my work was gained by walks in and around Frensham Ponds, the Alice Holt Forest, and along the hidden River Wey.” With her bright use of colour and clever portrayals of natural light it allows the viewer to see the local landscape in a new and refreshing way.

The exhibition is on until 5th June 2010.
